Sam Adams

Sam Adams is the former mayor of Portland, Oregon, where he led the effort to create Portland’s first comprehensive export policy to help local businesses. Together with other local leaders, and the Brookings Institute, Sam set up the Greater Portland Metro Export Strategy.

To help implement this strategy, he led the creation of the Portland Seed Fund, an investment fund made up of both public and private capital for high-tech start-ups. To date, the $7 million public-sector investment in the fund has been matched with $500 million raised by participating firms. The Seed Fund has helped Portland become an important start-up region in the U.S. These initiatives and others helped the region boost the value of its exports in a short time and to add to its trade balance with foreign countries.

Sam Adams currently lives and works in Portland and Washington, where he advises companies, governments and non-profit organizations. He is also a columnist for the monthly CityLab magazine of The Atlantic.
